The excursion starts by a walking tour around Pompeii to visit some of the most important buildings in town bringing the ancient city alive. Pompeii founded by the Italics people, the Oscans,  became a colony of Rome in the 1st century BC. The city was buried in 79 AD, during the terrible and devastating eruption of the Vesuvius volcano, in layers of ash and lapillus and lost from memory. In 1748, during the reign of King Charles of Bourbon, excavations began, luring royalty, writers, artists, and ordinary people from everywhere. They had an irresistible curiosity to visit and see for themselves the ancient city as it was brought back to the world, almost intact in its splendor! Walking  on the original streets we pass typical shops and buildings that were used during daily life: bakeries, termopoliums, the public baths, a domus. Reaching the Forum area we are surrounded by: the Basilica, the Macellum, theCapitolium, the Building of Eumachia, the Vespasianus and Apollo Temple. During our tour we also see some of thevictims of the eruption, most of them asphyxiated.

After a full immersion in the ancient history we reach by car the charming town of Sorrento, surrounded by a marvelous landscape of olive groves, in the area they make an excellent extra virgin olive oil. Sorrento has been celebrated as a prime tourist resort since the time of the Grand Tour in the 18th century. Enjoy a stroll through the narrow streets ofthe historical center spending your time for some sightseeing and lunch.

Before reaching the archeological Museum we will by car pass along some of the most important monuments of Naples: the imposing Castle “Maschio Angioino”Opera House San Carlo and the Galleria Umberto I, one of the most beautiful square’s in Italy: Piazza del Plebiscito. The square is surrounded by impressive buildings, such as the elegant Royal Palace and the neoclassical church of San Francesco di Paola.

The Naples archeological Museum has perhaps one of the most complete collections of art treasures of the Classical World. The museum contains a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. The collections includes works of the highest quality produced in Greek, Roman and Renaissance times and the large collection of the Farnese. The collection of the findings from Pompei and Herculaneum began in the Royal Villa of Portici as the excavation started in 1738. The Farnese collection came to Naples through King Charles of Borbon, the last heir of that family through his mother Elisabetta second wife of Philip of Spain. The ancient sculptures which were in the Farnese villas in Rome were brought to Naples in 1787 and it is this year that King Ferdinando decided to give the various collections a permanent exihibition and the remains from Portici and the Farnese collection were placed in the palace that today is the Museum. The building was erected originally in 1585 as a stable but later Vicere’ Pedro Fernandez had the building transformed into a University where Gianbattista Vico taught rhetoric.   The museum is divided on three different levels, our visit will be focused on the two most important collections: the Farnese collection with a large number of sculpture coming from Rome of which you will not miss the two most imposing pieces:  the Hercules and the  Farnese Bull a massive block of marble with the representation of the myth of Dirce, both sculptures are represented in Hellenistic style. But the museum is especially  world famous for its rich collection of objects, mosaics, frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Among the most important pieces are: the mosaic floor found in the house of the dancing Faun in Pompeii representing the Battle of Issus between Alexander the Great and Darius of Persia;  the bronze statue of the dancing faun; Secret Gabinetto which houses the erotic objects of Pompeii and Herculaneum and was opened only after 1971 when the ministry was given the new rules to regulate requests for visits and access to the section. It was  completely rebuilt with a new criteria, the collection was finally re- opened to the public in April 2000. Inside the archeological museum there is a large section of the artifacts found  in the ancient towns along the Bay of Naples, that were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the artifacts in glass, bronze, terracotta are perfectly intact. “If open” A large section inside the museum is dedicated to the famous Villa of the Papyri found in the ancient city of Herculaneum. The plan of the Getty Museum, located between Los Angeles and Malibu, was inspired by the Villa of the Papyri. The wonderful villa, that probably belonged to the Pisone family, father in law of Julius Caesar, was one of the most extraordinary examples of patrician villas in the Bay of Naples. The discovery, in the eighteenth century, of the library containing more than 1000 papyri founded carbonized was amazing. Although with extreme difficulty, it is possible to interpret the content. The tour ends admiring the rich collections of bronze statues that decorated the villa.
