The excursion starts by a walking tour around Pompeii to visit some of the most important buildings in town bringing the ancient city alive. Pompeii founded by the Italics people, the Oscans, became a colony of Rome in the 1st century BC. The city was buried in 79 AD, during the terrible and devastating eruption of the Vesuvius volcano, in layers of ash and lapillus and lost from memory. In 1748, during the reign of King Charles of Bourbon, excavations began, luring royalty, writers, artists, and ordinary people from everywhere. They had an irresistible curiosity to visit and see for themselves the ancient city as it was brought back to the world, almost intact in its splendor! Walking on the original streets we pass typical shops and buildings that were used during daily life: bakeries, termopoliums, the public baths, a domus. Reaching the Forum area we are surrounded by: the Basilica,
the Macellum, theCapitolium, the Building of Eumachia, the Vespasianus and Apollo Temple. During our tour we also see some of thevictims of the eruption, most of them asphyxiated.
After a full immersion in the ancient history we reach by car the
charming town of Sorrento, surrounded by a marvelous landscape of olive groves, in the area they make an excellent extra virgin olive oil. Sorrento has been celebrated as a prime tourist resort since the time of the Grand Tour in the 18th century.
Enjoy a stroll through the narrow streets of
the historical center spending your time for some sightseeing and lunch.
After Sorrento by car we will reach the area of Mount Vesuvius.
Mount Vesuvius is one of the most well known volcanoes in the world and you can’t miss a trip to the top! The most famous eruption was that one of the 79 AD, that buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the last eruption was in march 1944.
The area of mount Vesuvius belongs to the Italian National Parks, with a lush vegetation typical of the Mediterranean bush. The flower symbol of the park is the broom, that during the blooming period may-july covers the mountain in a brilliant yellow colour, it inspired a famous Italian poet Leopardi to write a poem called “the Broom”.
The mountain is approximately 1200m, by car we can reach 1000m and we climb the rest.Once at the top you will look inside the crater and see fumaroles.
From the top you’ll have stunning
views of the picturesque bay of Naples from east to west.
