Walking TourOne of the best preserved ancient cities in the world! Herculaneum stood on a terrace overlooking the sea at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii and Herculaneum were totally different. Herculaneum was a holiday resort, Pompeii was a city of commerce. Pompeii during the eruption was covered by ash and lapilli that rained down on the city for hours and its citizens died stifled by gases and ash that filled their mouths.
Herculaneum, was buried at a single stroke on the evening of August 24th, 79 AD: an avalanche of mud, mixed with pyroclastic material submerged the town and carbonized all organic material. The excavations are today located in a valley surrounded by the modern city.
In Herculaneum we visit the villas where the rich aristocratic Roman families spent their holidays and admire the carbonized wooden furniture of 2000 years ago.We walk across an elevated walkway enjoying an amazing view of the excavations below. The ancient town is at about 20m. below the present day city.
Underneath we have part of the ancient beach and the boat houses, where they found hundreds of skeletons of the inhabitants that rushed down to the shore attempting to escape by sea.Entering the excavations you will step back into history: the elegant houses, the shops, the thermal baths are all well preserved, with the original frescoes on the walls, fine tiles and mosaic floors. You will not miss the house of Neptune and Amphitrite, where the famous mosaic is kept that gave the name to the house and a beautiful shop close to it, where you can see how a ‘taberna’ was organized, with its counter, its wine amphoras and carbonized wooden furniture.
We continue our pleasant stroll through the excavations and
reach the Forum area where many activities took place with fountains, graffiti on the walls, in front of us is
a huge wall of mud on which the modern town was built.
From the forum we move to the Sacellum of the Augustales dedicated to the Emperor with remarkable frescos.
