Villa Jovis is the most important roman imperial villa on the island of Capri. The
imposing Imperial Palace, was built by
Emperor Tiberius, who lived for many years on the island of Capri and ruled the Roman Empire from the island. After the excavations made by one of the greatest Italian archaeologists, Amedeo Maiuri, in 1937 the archaeological site was inaugurated.
The
villa is situated at the
top of a cliff,
with a view of the eastern side of the island and the
entire gulf of Naples, having the Sorrento Peninsula and Punta Campanella so close that it seems you can touch them! The
villa covered an area of over
5500 square meters, plus a huge garden that probably occupied the entire hill. There was a lighthouse 25 meters high, used as a signal tower to communicate with the mainland, similar lighthouses were located on Cape Miseno and Punta Campanella, that was also used as a observatory for the imperial astrologer.
After an hour walking from the famous Piazzetta, through an interesting narrow uphill street, we will reach the remains of this great villa. We will see what is
left of the
baths, the
huge cisterns designed to collect rainwater, the reception rooms. But what you will love the most is an enormous loggia with stunning views of the Gulf.
Villa Jovis is particularly
famous for a point called
“Tiberius slope”.
It is said that from that point, which has a dramatic view of the sheer cliff and drop to the sea,
Tiberius would throw people off that he didn’t like. After the visit walk back to the centre of Capri Town.
